Netflix has revealed the development of a new stop-motion animated series starring two of Sanrio’s beloved characters: My Melody and Kuromi. Titled “My Melody & Kuromi,” the series will be produced by WIT STUDIO, known for their work on successful titles such as “SPY x FAMILY,” “Attack on Titan,” and “Vinland Saga.” This production marks a special tribute to My Melody’s 50th anniversary and Kuromi’s 20th anniversary, with a scheduled release in July 2025.

The series will take viewers on a journey through Mariland, the charming home of the characters, and promises to offer an exciting story with visual elements that explore the boundaries of stop-motion. Netflix has already released a special preview that showcases the characters in their animated form, increasing fans’ anticipation.

The project is directed by Tomoki Misato, known for their work on “Pui Pui Molcar,” who expressed their excitement for this collaboration: “I am thrilled that this project is finally announced in such an important year, celebrating the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi. This project motivated all of us to face various challenges and take stop-motion to the next level. I hope everyone enjoys this exciting story set in our handmade Mariland, with vibrant action and adorable, dynamic characters.“

The animation team is led by Toruku, a production line of WIT STUDIO established in 2020. Writer Shuko Nemoto is also part of the creative team, highlighting the significance of writing the dialogues for such iconic characters. Nemoto reflected on the development process, which extended over several years due to pandemic restrictions: “Due to the pandemic, I couldn’t meet in person with director Tomoki or the producers, but we connected remotely on a weekly basis to carefully build this project filled with love for the world of My Melody. I believe that both adults and children will find favorite scenes and dialogues in this story.“

“My Melody & Kuromi” joins a growing list of Netflix productions inspired by Sanrio characters, such as “Aggretsuko” and “Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure.” The platform has also recently embraced stop-motion with “Pokemon Concierge,” which will have a second season. This phenomenon reflects the popularity of mascots as a basis for animated adaptations, including examples such as “Chiikawa” on HIDIVE and “Bananya” on Crunchyroll. In addition, WIT STUDIO’s sister company, Production I.G., announced a Rilakkuma series last October.
