- Tawny Newsome would happily play Beckett Mariner in a live-action Star Trek series set after Star Trek: Picard season 3.
- The age of Mariner is confusing, but Newsome doesn’t care and would still show up for the role.
- According to the established timeline, Mariner would be around 50 years old in the 25th-century timeframe of Star Trek: Picard season 3.
In an interview with Inverse, Tawny Newsome expressed her willingness to reprise the role of Beckett Mariner in a live-action Star Trek series set in the “Legacy era,” which refers to the 25th-century timeline established by the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3. Despite the confusion surrounding Mariner’s age, Newsome stated that she doesn’t care and would happily show up for the role.
“Oh, I’ll happily play any iteration of her in live-action. I think in the Legacy era though, I don’t know how old I would have to be. Mariner’s age is confusing to me, but who cares? Yeah, sure, I’ll show up!”
How Old Is Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Beckett Mariner, Anyway?
Mariner’s age is a little confusing.
Questions regarding Lieutenant Beckett Mariner’s age have been circulating since her debut. However, the finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 provided some clarity. It was revealed that Mariner attended Starfleet Academy in 2368, where she was classmates with Nova Squadron. Considering that she was younger than Nova Squadron, if she was approximately 16 in 2368, Beckett would have been born around 2352. This means that Mariner is approximately 29 in the finale of Lower Decks season 4, which takes place 13 years later.
Mariner’s desire to remain in the lowest ranks of Starfleet was shaped by the tragic death of Ensign Sito Jaxa in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7’s “Lower Decks.”
In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, Beckett Mariner was promoted to Lieutenant, junior grade, along with her friends aboard the USS Cerritos. She vehemently opposed this rank increase but ultimately couldn’t change the situation. The ending of Star Trek: Picard season 3, which sets up the unrealized continuation of Star Trek: Legacy, takes place in 2402. This would make Mariner around 50 years old in the 25th-century timeframe of Picard. The question remains: will Mariner’s dream of remaining a Lower Decker come true, or will she achieve the rank of Captain?
Both Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Picard are available to stream on Paramount+.
