  • Villeneuve embraces imperfection in Dune: Part Two, prioritizing authentic performances over flawless visuals.
  • Dune: Part Two is getting great reviews from critics.

Director Denis Villeneuve explains why he left an imperfection in Dune: Part Two. Continuing the story of 2021’s Dune, the movie follows protagonist Paul Atreides as he teams up with Chani to seek vengeance on those who destroyed his family. The upcoming Dune: Part Two features a star-studded cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Javier Bardem.

Speaking with The New York Times, Villeneuve explains why he left one imperfection in Dune: Part Two. In the interview, the director was asked about a shot wherein Pugh dons a headdress that is not on straight, but rather is sliding down her nose. Villeneuve explained that “part of him tried to do it perfect” due to his predilection towards faultlessness, but he ultimately realized that “life is chaos” and “life is stronger.” Check out the full quote from Villeneuve below:

No, no. It’s a balance between perfection and life. Life is chaos. I’m pretty O.C.D., but the performance will always prevail. I know exactly what you’re talking about. Good eye. Leonard Cohen says that when there’s a crack in something, that’s where the light comes in. I believe in that. Part of me tried to do it perfect. But life is stronger and I prefer that.

I’m moved by what you’re saying because it’s something that challenges me. Sometimes I know that the camera movement is not absolutely perfect, but there’s something in the performance that breaks my heart. F*ck it. I will choose that take because it feels more powerful.

Dune: Part Two Is Getting High Praise

Close

While it releases widely on March 1, Dune: Part Two has already had its premiere in London and is starting to be seen by critics. Said critics have referred to Dune: Part Two as a near-perfect film, even with some minuscule visual ticks like that of Pugh’s headdress. Aligning with Villeneuve’s statement that “there’s something in the performance that breaks [his] heart,” critics have paid particular attention to the film’s strong performances.

So far, Dune: Part Two’s screenings have resulted in a high critical rating for the film. At the time of writing, Dune: Part Two has garnered a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is higher than the first Dune film’s 83% score. There is still more time for reviews to roll in, as the film is still releasing.

In addition to the critical reviews, several IMAX audiences were given the chance to see a 10-minute clip from the film, rather than just the more widely-released Dune: Part Two trailers. Those audiences also raved about this preview, calling it visually masterful. With all this positive attention for Dune: Part Two, the sci-fi film is positioned to become 2024’s first blockbuster hit.
