Summary

  • Gladstone acknowledges and validates the criticism of Killers of the Flower Moon for telling the story from a non-Osage perspective.
  • The film’s perspective has sparked controversy due to its focus on the white character, Ernest, rather than the Osage characters.
  • The film’s depiction of Mollie and Ernest’s relationship has drawn criticism, but Margie Burkhart, Mollie’s granddaughter, believes their love was genuine.

Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone addresses the criticism of the film’s perspective. The Martin Scorsese movie premiered on October 20 and has proven to be one of the year’s biggest hits. Killers of the Flower Moon tells the true tale of the Osage Nation in the 1920s, as the Indigenous community experienced a series of suspicious murders after becoming wealthy from oil discovered on their land. While the film has received critical acclaim, there has been criticism, with those belonging to the Indigenous community having especially insightful thoughts on the film.

In an interview with Variety, Gladstone addressed some major criticisms of how Killers of the Flower Moon tells the Osage story. It has stirred some controversy due to its decision to tell the story from Ernest Burkhart’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) perspective instead of telling it from the perspective of the Osage. This was a criticism expressed by some members of the Osage Nation. Gladstone welcomed and validated the criticism but suggested that this angle was necessary for a filmmaker like Scorsese. Check out her statement below:

Chris [Cote] and I have had that exact conversation in his living room. Marty is a titan, but he’s not bigger than history. He’s a major shaper of it though. It’s the tricky nature of a story like this. You have more representation, but coming from somebody who’s not from the community. So you always have to look at it with a different angle. And there’s nothing wrong with that; you just have to be very aware of the film that you’re watching and what lens it was made through.

Love is complicated. I’ve certainly loved people in my life that were not good for me, and I couldn’t really free myself from it.

Why Killers of the Flower Moon Controversial to Some

It’s not surprising that critics have hailed Killers of the Flower Moon because it is a very well-made film that boldly recounts a dark tale with Oscar-worthy performances across the board. However, it’s important to remember the perspectives of film critics and the Indigenous community are very different. The Osage Nation won’t just be looking at quality but what this film means for their people, whose story was largely erased from history until recent years. It’s not difficult to understand why the perspective concerned the Osage Nation.

The concern was expressed by Killers of the Flower Moon Osage language consultant Christopher Cote. While he felt the Osage representation was positive, he expressed his desire for the film to focus on Mollie’s (Gladstone) perspective and her family. Instead, it is told from the perspective of the man who killed Mollie’s family. Reservation Dogs star Devery Jacobs laid into the film more heavily, expressing anger that the white characters, like Ernest, were given more depth than the Osage characters. Concerns also arose over the emphasis on Mollie’s and Ernest’s relationship, as the film insinuates their love was genuine.

While the film’s depiction of Mollie’s and Ernest’s relationship has drawn criticism, Mollie Burkhart’s granddaughter, Margie Burkhart, also believes her grandparents were genuinely in love.

Considering what Ernest did to Mollie’s family, it’s not surprising that any attempts to humanize him or make him seem capable of love are controversial. There are also arguments for Killers of the Flower Moon’s perspective, though, as it further allows Scorses to probe the concept of evil. Meanwhile, perhaps this was the only lens Scorsese could authentically tell the story from as a non-Osage. Gladstone validates the Indigenous community’s concerns by acknowledging that viewers must always be careful to understand where the story of Killers of the Flower Moon is coming from and the limitations and benefits of that lens.
