In the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, original star William Moseley has addressed the possibility of reprising his role in the fantasy franchise. The movie will be based on C.S. Lewis’ book series and will explore a parallel world of fantasy. Moseley played the major character Peter Pevensie in three previous theatrical films: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
During an interview with Screen Rant about his upcoming movie Murder Company, Moseley expressed that he would readily return for Greta Gerwig’s reboot adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. However, he believes that due to the finality of his role in Prince Caspian, it is unlikely he will be asked to come back. Moseley shared:
“Yes,” is the short answer. If I was asked, I would go in a heartbeat. But I have to remind you of one line from the books and the movies. I think Aslan says it. ‘Your time here now is done. Your time is finished.’ I remember when I shot that scene in Prince Caspian, it was a sad scene to shoot, but I understood then when Aslan said that to those characters, that when that script is written for me, my time is done. And that’s the way it is. If I might ever get asked that, great, but I don’t think it’s there.”
Moseley’s involvement in the franchise concluded with Prince Caspian, although he did make a small appearance in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. As the actor has a strong connection to the franchise through the character he portrayed, a return is plausible should Gerwig decide to bring back other previous cast members. However, considering that the original Chronicles of Narnia cast has aged significantly since the release of the original movies, there would need to be notable changes in their appearances.
One possible way for Moseley to be involved in the adaptation is by playing a different character in the franchise, possibly an older individual than the Pevensie siblings from the original story. This could range from Mr. Tumnus to Aslan himself, offering Moseley a substantial role while avoiding retelling a previous storyline. Alternatively, he could have a smaller part as a background character in a cameo appearance, paying homage to the original movie trilogy.
Making entertaining movies while remaining true to the Narnia books may be conflicting goals, especially when it comes to one particular book.
While it remains uncertain if Gerwig’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia will bring back actors from past installments, Moseley’s interest opens the door for other previous cast members to express their thoughts on the remakes. Perhaps Gerwig will take these sentiments into account and surprise fans by including the original stars in unexpected roles. For now, it seems that Netflix’s adaptation will offer a fresh start for the franchise, making it impossible to predict what will happen when the new movies debut on the streaming platform.
Greta Gerwig is set to direct two movies for The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, although it is currently unclear which books will be adapted.
