Star Wars Sets The Scene For The Phantom Menace’s Tatooine Plot

An excerpt from John Jackson Miller’s upcoming novel, “Star Wars: The Living Force,” which serves as a prequel to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, depicts the Jedi in retreat. The story follows the members of the Jedi Council as they undertake a mission to an ancient Jedi outpost on the planet Kwenn, established during the High Republic era. Qui-Gon Jinn’s challenge and the desire to demonstrate their independence to the Senate prompted the Council to visit Kwenn. The Living Force has the potential to greatly impact the entire Star Wars saga.

In the released excerpt, the Jedi Council deliberates the possibility of closing down the ancient Jedi outpost to meet the Galactic Senate’s request for Jedi intervention. They discuss the outpost’s significance on Kwenn.

“Present, several of us were,” Yoda said. “A symbol, at the edge of Hutt space.”

Plo nodded. “A grand gesture. It showed there was no place we would not go.”

Although details about the story are scarce, The Living Force seems to suggest that the Jedi were retreating from Hutt space. While the Jedi of the High Republic era used Kwenn to demonstrate peacekeeping abilities throughout the galaxy, their presence in the farthest regions diminished during the Age of the Republic.

Kwenn serves as a representation of the Jedi’s decline since the High Republic era and their relinquishment of untapped potential. In the past, Jedi held enough power to challenge the Hutt cartel’s influence in the Outer Rim. The closure of the Kwenn outpost would symbolize the Hutts’ victory over the Jedi, indicating that certain parts of the galaxy were beyond the Jedi’s reach for establishing peace. This retreat sets the stage for The Phantom Menace and ultimately shapes Anakin Skywalker’s fate, predating his encounter with Qui-Gon Jinn.

During the Age of the Republic, the Jedi, bound by the Senate, were no longer able to resist its influence, weakening them. Deepening their presence in Hutt space instead of retreating might have led them to discover Anakin at a much younger age. Anakin’s early Jedi training could have made him less susceptible to attachments and Palpatine’s seduction, potentially altering the entire galaxy. However, all of this hinges on the fate of a single outpost.

Kwenn also represents a tragic aspect of the Jedi Council’s downfall. They were aware of the Senate’s overwhelming influence and visited the outpost to showcase their independence. Unfortunately, their attempts to undo the damage came too late, making The Living Force an even more heartbreaking addition to The Phantom Menace and illustrating the Jedi’s inevitable decline.
