Baker is renowned for his independent films that focus on the lives of sex workers – including Starlet, Tangerine, The Florida Project, Red Rocket (2021), and Anora continues this trend for the filmmaker, but with a story strikingly similar to Pretty Woman. The 1990 romantic-comedy follows Julia Roberts as an escort who is hired by a wealthy businessman (played by Richard Gere) to accompany him to various social functions, and their relationship evolves over their week together. Pretty Woman made $463 million at the box office and, at the time of its release, became the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time.

Much of the buzz surrounding Anora is due to the fact that it won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the highest prize awarded at the French film festival, and was the first American film to win the award since Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life in 2011.
