Lisa Frankenstein’s Rotten Tomatoes score is in, revealing the reception of the latest adaptation of Frankenstein. Directed by Zelda Williams, Lisa Frankenstein is a love story about a teenage girl and her crush, who is a reanimated corpse. Lisa Frankenstein is set for release on February 9 and stars a leading cast of Cole Sprouse, Kathryn Newton, Liza Soberano, Jenna Davis, and Trina LaFargue.
Now, the Rotten Tomatoes score for Lisa Frankenstein has been revealed. The film currently holds a 54% on the site. At the time of writing, Lisa Frankenstein does not yet have an audience score, as the film is just before release.
First adapted into the 1910 silent film Frankenstein, Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel has had a number of prominent adaptations over the years. These have included 1994’s Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, 2013’s Frankenweenie, 1957’s The Curse of Frankenstein, and 1974’s Young Frankenstein. The first film has a lower score than Lisa Frankenstein, with only a 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. The latter three films, however, hold much higher scores, with 88%, 82%, and 94% scores, respectively.
In addition to the copious Shelley adaptations that came before it, Lisa Frankenstein also suffers from the unfortunate fate of having to follow two impeccably-crafted 2023 reanimation films. These are Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated Poor Things (92% Rotten Tomatoes score) and Laura Moss’s stunning indie debut Birth/Rebirth (96%). While neither is a direct Shelley adaptation, their likeness to Frankenstein leaves Lisa Frankenstein with big footsteps to fill.
Unfortunately for the Williams film, it seems that Lisa Frankenstein has fallen short of the task. Not all hope is lost for Lisa Frankenstein, as audiences may respond well to its romantic, dark comedy-style take on the work. As the film releases just before Valentine’s Day, hopefully Lisa Frankenstein will find its audience despite disappointing early reviews.
