Summary:
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, Gore Vebinski’s first movie in 8 years, is now in production. With a script from Matthew Robinson, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die tells the story of a man from the future who travels to an L.A. diner in the past to assemble its patrons into a team for a one-night mission to save the world. The film marks Verbinski’s first movie since A Cure for Wellness in 2016, which was a notable box office failure.
Deadline now confirms that Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die has officially started production in South Africa. The movie stars Sam Rockwell as the time-traveling man attempting to assemble the team, with Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Peña, Juno Temple, and Zazie Beetz starring as the bar patrons. The film doesn’t yet have a release date.
Rockwell recently starred in Argylle opposite Henry Cavill. The film was a notable critical and commercial failure.
After finding success with The Ring in 2002, Verbinski truly entered the world of blockbuster filmmaking when he took on directing duties for the first Pirates of the Caribbean in 2003. The film was a big hit for Disney, and Verbinski would return to direct its two direct sequels, which were even more successful. Outside the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, however, Verbinski has struggled to achieve box office success.
Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is currently in development, though Verbinski is seemingly not involved. The film is expected to serve as a reboot for the franchise.
Verbinski’s 2011 animated movie, Rango, may have been a hit with critics, but it wasn’t as big with audiences and only earned $245.7 million on a budget of $135 million. The director’s next film was 2013’s The Lone Ranger, which was an infamous flop critically and commercially, earning a disastrous $260.5 million on a $215 million budget. The final nail in the coffin was A Cure for Wellness in 2016, which earned a measly $26.6 million on a budget of $40 million.
There’s evidently a lot riding on Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, then, as the film has the potential to break Verbinski’s unfortunate string of box office disappointments. It’s not clear what the movie’s budget is, but it boasts a fun premise and a solid cast, which is a promising sign. With Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die now officially in production, more about the film will hopefully be revealed over the coming months.
