Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga director George Miller reveals that his latest film will be getting a black-and-white version. Serving as a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller’s new movie chronicles the origin story of Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, though Anya Taylor-Joy plays the character this time around. The reviews for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga are largely as positive as the ones for Fury Road, but it was initially unclear whether the prequel would be getting the equivalent of that film’s “Black and Chrome Edition.”

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Miller confirms that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will indeed be getting a black-and-white version.

According to the director, the version for Furiosa could be called the “Tinted Black and Chrome” edition, continuing the naming convention from his black-and-white version of Fury Road. Check out his comment below when asked if a black-and-white version of the prequel is coming:

“We’ve done it already. It’s the last thing I did on this film, and I call it “Tinted Black & Chrome,” or I want to call it Tinted Black & Chrome. I must say, it’s really interesting. I’m still trying to demystify why the black and white, for me, has something more elemental to it. I still can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s not because they look like old black-and-white movies, it’s something else. It’s like if we took a picture of ourselves right now, it might look a little more dramatic if it was black and white.”

Mad Max: Fury Road takes place over the course of a few days and is essentially one long car chase. Furiosa is really the main character of that film, with Tom Hardy’s Max tagging along as she attempts to escape from the Citadel with the War Rig. In addition to the titular character, Furiosa features the return of characters like Immortan Joe, Rictus Erectus, The Peopler Eater, The Bullet Farmer, and Organic Mechanic, among others. The two movies also take place in the same Mad Max world, meaning they share many similarities in terms of atmosphere, colors, and specific locations.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Story brings back many iconic characters from Mad Max: Fury Road, and here is each one that appears in the prequel movie.

In terms of story structure, however, the two films are very different. Furiosa is very much an odyssey, chronicling Taylor-Joy’s character’s life over the course of roughly 15 years as she faces off against Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus. This means the film isn’t one non-stop car chase, and instead burrows deeper into Furiosa’s life and upbringing, explaining exactly how she became the figure depicted in Mad Max: Fury Road. That isn’t to say, however, that both films don’t feature the same brand of breathless, chaotic action.

Furiosa features plenty of vehicle-based set pieces, including several involving the iconic War Rig. With his new prequel, Miller proves yet again that he knows how to stage action, and the two films are equally impressive in this regard. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ultimately features a healthy balance of old and new, meaning the upcoming Tinted Black & Chrome edition should be just as impressive as the black-and-white version of Mad Max: Fury Road.
