How The Fall Of Reach Sets Up The Events Of Future Halo Seasons

Ahead of the release of Halo season 2, showrunner David Wiener and producer Kiki Wolfkill explain how the new episodes address the tragedy of the Fall of Reach. The Paramount+ series is based on the influential video game franchise and follows a highly-trained super-soldier fighting for humanity’s survival against the powerful alien alliance known as The Covenant. Season 2 adapts the events leading into the original 2001 video game Halo: Combat Evolved, as The Covenant discovers and launches a devastating invasion on the human stronghold of Reach.

Wiener and Wolfkill opened up to Screen Rant about bringing the tragic battle to the screen. Due to the higher stakes and importance within the series’ timeline, Wiener set out to frame the events in a way that throws audiences into the struggle alongside the cast, as the conflict may not end with every character coming out alive. Check out Wiener and Wolfkill’s comments below:

David Wiener: Well, we can only speculate. I’d say that there are certain parts of the Halo universe and events that are, I think, so emotionally resonant that they really belong in dramatic form. Whether it’s the Fall of Reach or any of the other places that we’ll go in this season, it gives an opportunity to see our characters in the most high-stakes [situations] with immediate struggles, where it’s survival on the line.

Part of that is supported by the tone and the perspective that we use in shooting. In this case, we go with a very subjective perspective throughout, with a lot of oners and a lot of continuous action to give us that sense that we’re in the fight with our Spartans. And the benefit of that is that we, as the audience, are grounded not only in the fine line between horror and action, but also in the emotional stakes of will they or won’t they. Because they may not survive.

Kiki Wolfkill: It is a huge moment in Halo. And you feel the events of Reach in a way that is very different from how you may experience it in books or games. You feel the impact of what it is to be there.

Within Halo’s continuity, the Fall of Reach is humanity’s darkest hour towards the end of the Human-Covenant War. Despite practices such as the Cole Protocol maintaining the secrecy of Earth, there was still an immense loss of life and resources. While early conflicts across the planet showed early UNSC victories, Reach’s fate was sealed when the Covenant’s largest fleet emerged from slipspace to glass the world. Alongside UNSC personnel and warship casualties, the majority of the Spartan II super-soldiers gave their lives to defend Reach, leaving only a handful still active, including the Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber).

However, it wasn’t just the Spartans who were left impacted by the Fall of Reach, as many key Halo characters were placed into situations that would reshape the galaxy. One such figure included the Covenant’s Supreme Commander Thel ‘Vadam, who led the invasion force and followed the Chief to the first Halo ring, and would change the Covenant forever in later games. As such, while the Fall of Reach was humanity’s darkest hour, it would also lead into the Human-Covenant War’s endgame that unfolded throughout the original Halo trilogy.

While characters such as Thel have yet to be confirmed for Halo season 2, Wiener and Wolfkill’s comments make it clear that the show’s adaptation of the Fall of Reach will be just as universe-altering as its game counterpart. The show aims to ensure that TV viewers feel the same heartbreak that existing fans endured, with Wiener’s comments revealing the intention to create a unique emotional experience.

Halo season 2’s two-episode premiere will air on Paramount+ on February 8.
