Abbott Elementary Season 4: Why Dennis is Barely Featured in It’s Always Sunny Crossover Episode

The recent crossover episode of Abbott Elementary season 4 brought together the worlds of Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in a truly unique way. However, fans may have noticed that Dennis Reynolds, played by Glenn Howerton, had minimal screen time in the episode titled "Volunteers." Executive producer Patrick Schumacker has shed light on this decision, explaining that Howerton’s availability was limited due to his commitments to the Netflix series Sirens.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Schumacker and fellow executive producer Justin Halpern discussed the crossover and Dennis’ limited appearance. They revealed that Howerton flew in specifically to work on the episode but had to return to New York for the Sirens shoot. Despite having Dennis for only half a day, the producers were able to incorporate his character into the episode, and viewers can expect to see him more when the Abbott Elementary cast guest stars on It’s Always Sunny later this year.

How Howerton’s Absence Is Handled & What It Means for the Crossover

While Dennis Reynolds may not have had much screen time in "Volunteers," viewers still catch glimpses of him during Abbott’s staff interactions with The Gang. Dennis, however, is not a fan of the mockumentary style of Abbott Elementary and refuses to give consent for his appearance on camera. Although he mainly avoids being filmed, the camera manages to capture a few quick shots of him. This creative approach humorously addresses Howerton’s absence from the episode and his involvement with Sirens.
