Un Abito Fatale: Poligamia / A Fatal Dress: Polygamy
M?jde Arslan
Emine became a kuma (second wife) when she was 14. Her husband was her cousin. Emine was abused and exposed to violence and sought shelter in her father’s house. But when her wounds healed, it was her father who took her back to her husband. Emine is my aunt and her story is the first one I remember from my childhood. Every time she visited, she either had a wound, a black eye or she was pregnant; sometimes she was both pregnant and wounded. She was barely 40. Her children, who were now adults, looked for ways to do something for her, but each time, she became worse. Finally, she suffered paralysis from a side effect of the medicine that she had to take. Emine, now lives with her empty mind that could not withstand the abuse. She doesn’t suffer any more. What about other women?
