Gadir è un pittore armeno che, come dice sua moglie, nella vita non combina mai niente di buono. Un giorno decide di arruolarsi per difendere la patria. Si arma di un vecchio fucile e, fra mille pericoli, si dirige verso il fronte. Arrivato a destinazione incontra Artavaz, un azerbagiano che viene da un paese vicino ma che si trova dalla parte del nemico. L’incontro fra i due uomini acquista una simbologia biblica. Guidati entrambi da un caso fortuito del destino, cercano di fuggire da una guerra incomprensibile, sempre più lontani dai loro cari e senza una meta precisa.

Guerre etniche, separatismo, intolleranza religiosa sono i sintomi della malattia provocata dalla civilizzazione umana sul finire del XX secolo. Negli ultimi dieci anni il Caucaso ha sofferto drammaticamente di questi mali. Il titolo del film si riferisce ad una canzone del folklore arzebagiano, famosa in tutta la regione del Caucaso, anche in Armenia (sebbene la sua origine sia ancora incerta). Racconta del tragico amore della "Sposa in giallo", un simbolo di amore, morte e fato. Animato da idee pacifiste, Rzayev ricorre ad un realismo poetico per meglio descrivere i sentimenti umani piuttosto che la realtà della guerra.

Gadir is an Armenian painter who, as his wife says, can’t do anything useful and so he decides to let himself be recruited. At least that way he can mean something to the defence of his fatherland. He arms himself with an old rifle and heads for the front, despite objections all round. There he meets the Azerbaijani Artavaz, a man from the neighbouring village, but from the country of the adversary. The experiences of both men acquire a biblical format. Brought together by a whim of fate, they flee from an incomprehensible war, further and further from the dear ones, going nowhere.

Ethnic wars, separatism, religious intolerance-they are symptoms of the illness of human civilization at the end of the twentieth century. In the last ten years, the Caucasus has again been torn by them. The title of the film refers to an Azerbaijani folk song that is popular through the Caucasus region, also in Armenia (even though the source of the song is disputed). It is about the tragic love of the "Bride In Yellow", a symbol of love, death and fate. In order to tell his pacifist story, Rzayev uses a poetic realism in which he does not concentrate on the expressions of war, but on the human psyche.

Yaver Rzayev

Nato a Baku nel 1956. Laureato presso l’Istituto di Arte di Baku nel 1982 e alla Scuola di Cinema di Mosca, VGIK, nel 1991. Ha diretto tre documentari. Il suo primo film a soggetto, Sari Gyalin (1999), ha ottenuto premi e riconoscimenti ai Festival di Karlovy Vary e Anapa (Russia).

Born in Baku in 1956. Graduated at the Institute of Arts in Baku in 1982 and at the School of cinema of the city of Moscow (VGIK) in 1991. He has directed three documentaries. His first film on subject, Sari Gyalin (1999), has achieved awards and acknowledgements at Karlovy Vary Film Festival and at the Anapa Festival (Russia).
