La guerra tra le forze governative e le "Tigri di Liberazione" del Tamil Eelam (LTTE) ha devastato lo Sri Lanka per quasi vent’anni. Ma le violente ostilità tra la maggioranza sinhalese e la minoranza del Tamil, le etnie dell’isola, risalgono a molti secoli prima. La storia del conflitto è complessa.

Saroja è ambientato in un piccolo villaggio dello Sri Lanka del nord-est, ai confini del quale dilaga la guerra. Dopo una battaglia, un soldato del LTTE gravemente ferito, costretto con la forza a far parte dell’organizzazione, fugge nella giungla con sua figlia. Si dirigono verso un villaggio sinhalese per chiedere aiuto. Il primo incontro è tra Varuni e Saroja.

Il rapporto fra due bambine dimostra agli adulti, divisi dall’odio e dall’intolleranza, come le differenze di lingua, razza e religione possano diventare strumenti per far nascere un’amicizia.

The war between the government forces and the "Liberation Tigres" of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), has blighted Sri Lanka for almost 20 years. But the deeper animosities between the majority Singhalese and minority Tamil races of this island go back to centuries. The history of this conflict is rather complex. Saroja is set in a small village on the borders of the war zone in north-eastern Sri Lanka. After a battle, a seriously wounded LTTE conscript, who was forced to join the organisation, escapes into a jungle with his daughter. Hunger and illness drives them towards a Singhalese village to seek help. The first conflict is between Varuni and Saroja. The relationship between the two little girls shows adults who live on hate and intolerance how diversities of language, race and religion can actually become basic ingredients for true friendship.

Laureato in radiografia diagnostica medica all’ Università di Londra, si è sempre interessato di arte e di media: Tornato nello Sri Lanka, è entrato a far parte del "City Art Circle" ed ha studiato teatro. Nel 1974 , al "National Youth Drama Festival", si è messo in luce aggiudicandosi i premi come miglior regista, scrittore ed attore. Apprezzato autore teatrale, ha scritto e diretto numerose commedie per la televisione. Nel 1978 è emigrato in Australia dove ha ottenuto un diploma di specializzazione in arti professionali presso l’Università del Nuovo Galles del Sud, presto seguito da un master in regia presso l’Università di Sydney. Saroja è il suo primo lungometraggio girato in Patria.

Although he obtained a degree in Diagnostic Medical Radiography from London University, his interests were always in the arts and media. On his return to Sri Lanka he joined the City Art Circle and studied theatre. At the "National Youth Drama Festival" of 1974, he set a record by winning the top individual awards as director, writer and actor. Highly acclaimed stage author, he has written and directed several TV drama series. In 1978 he emigrated to Australia where he obtained a post-graduate diploma in Professional Arts from the University of New South Wales, followed by a MA in Directing from Sidney University. Saroja is his first feature in motherland.
