Geniale, poliedrico e appassionato, si è misurato con successo in tutti campi dell’arte: dal cinema alla scrittura, dalla musica al disegno. Attraverso le sue testimonianze dirette, i suoi diari, lettere, spartiti e appunti di lavoro, il regista ripercorre la vita e l’opera di un artista che nel corso della sua "titanica" carriera ha diretto 30 film (componendone anche le musiche) e pubblicato 35 romanzi e più di 100 racconti per ragazzi, da lui stesso illustrati.

It’s a portrait of Satyajit Ray, the giant of Bengalese Renaissance, a movement that blends eastern culture with western thought. Genius, versatile and passionate, he achieved success in all art fields: from cinema to writing, from music to painting. Throughout his direct experience, his diaries, letters, music sheets and reflections, the director runs through life and works of an artist that has directed, during his titanic carrier, 30 films (also composing the music) and published 35 novels and more than a hundred children stories with thousands of illustrations.

Goutam Ghose

Nato a Calcutta nel 1950, dopo essersi laureato presso l’Università di Calcutta, si occupa di teatro come animatore e regista. Dirige nel 1973 il suo primo cortometraggio, New Heart. Esordisce nel lungometraggio con Maa Bhoomi (1979), ed è tra gli interpreti di Grihayuddha di Buddhadeb Dasgupta, presentato al Festival di Venezia del 1982. Due anni dopo con Paar, sempre a Venezia, riceve il premio FIPRESCI. In seguito produce cortometraggi, documentari e film che vengono selezionati e premiati in festival prestigiosi quali Karlovy Vary, Sydney, Locarno, Berlino, Venezia, Cannes. Tra i suoi ultimi lavori si segnalano: Padma Nadir Majhi (1993), Patang (1994), Gudia (1998) e Ray (1999).

Born in Calcutta in 1950, after graduating from the University of Calcutta, becomes involved in theatre as entertainer and director. He directs his first short film, New Heart, in 1973. He makes his debut in long films through Maa Bhoomi (1979), and stars in Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Grihayuddha, presented at the Venice film festival in 1982. Still in Venice, two years later he receives the award FIPRESCI with Paar. After that he produced shorts, documentaries and feature films that get selected and awarded in prestigious film festivals like Karlovy Vary, Sydney, Locarno, Berlin, Venice, Cannes. Among his last works: Padma Nadir Majhi (1993), Patang (1994), Gudia (1998) and Ray (1999).
