Storia vera del poeta didong Ibrahim Kadir.(Didong è uno stile di ballata poetica originaria del Gayo, Aceh Centrale). Ibrahim ha vissuto uno dei periodi più instabili della storia indonesiana, la repressione sociale e politica del 1965. Detenuto in carcere, diventò testimone della violenza e degli eccidi commessi dai militari. Quando riacquistò la libertà, dedicò le sue opere a quel drammatico periodo.

La maggior parte degli interpreti sono attori non professionisti, nativi di Takengon, che hanno vissuto direttamente la violenza di quei giorni e che hanno visto uccidere parenti e amici. Ibrahim Kadir interpreta se stesso. Durante la lavorazione del film è stato doloroso ricordare quei momenti. Una donna di Takengon ha pianto durante tutte le riprese, come se rivivisse ancora una volta quella tragica esperienza. (Garin Nugroho)

True story of the didong poet Ibrahim Kadir.(Didong is a style of poetic ballad originating from Gayo, Central Aceh). Ibrahim faced one of the most significant time periods in Indonesian history, the social and political repression in 1965. Put to prison, he became a living witness to mass killings committed by the military force. After his release he conveyed the extent of this tragedy into beautiful humanistic poems.

Most of the cast are Tagenkon natives who had experienced the brutality and whose kin and friends were among the victims. Ibrahim Kadir stars as himself. It was hard and touching to recall those times during the making of the film. A Takengon woman, has cried throughout the whole shooting as it brought back memories of her own desperate experience. Garin Nugroho

Nato nel 1961 a Giakarta, nel 1986 si laurea alla Film Academy della sua città. Realizza alcuni documentari, due dei quali, Tepuk Tangon e Teneh Tantangam, ottengono il primo premio all’Indonesian Film Festival, rispettivamente nel 1986 e nel 1989. Ha diretto il suo primo film nel 1991, Cinta Dafam Sepotong Roti, che ottiene numerosi riconoscimenti anche all’estero (miglior opera prima all’Asia Pacific Film Festival - Sud Corea). Nel 1998 con Daumdi Atas Bantal vince il Premio speciale della Giuria all’11° Tokyo International Film Festival. Oltre che regista, in veste di critico cinematografico collabora ai più importanti quotidiani indonesiani e insegna presso la facoltà di Cinema e Televisione dell’Istituto di Arti di Giakarta. Particolarmente attento a sostenere nel suo Paese un cinema socialmente impegnato, in qualità di chairman partecipa ai lavori della Social and Cultural Commission of the Indonesian National Film Board.

Born in Jakarta in 1961, he graduates in 1986 from the Film Academy of his town. He starts making documentaries, two of which, Tepuk Tangon and Teneh Tantangam, obtain first prize at the Indonesian Film Festival, in 1986 and in 1989 respectively. He has directed in 1991 his first film, Cinta Dafam Sepotong Roti, which obtains many achievements also abroad (Best young director at the Asia Pacific Film Festival in South Korea). He gets the Special Jury Prize at the 11^th Tokyo International Film Festival in 1998 for the film Daumdi Atas Bantal. Besides directing, Nugroho is a film critic for the major Indonesian newspapers and lectures at the Faculty of Film and Television of Jakarta’s Institute of the Arts. He is dedicated to building a more socially committed national cinema in Indonesia and therefore is Chairman of the Social and Cultural Commission of the Indonesian National Film Board.
