Cambogia 1999. Nella striscia di terra che divide la Thailandia dal Vietnam, si mettono a punto i lavori per l’allestimento della prima rete informatica. Dopo decenni di guerre sanguinose, anche questa parte del Sud Est Asiatico sta per entrare a far parte del villaggio globale. Poveri, contadini, reduci mutilati, accorrono con la speranza di trovare finalmente un posto di lavoro. Ma durante gli scavi vengono alla luce migliaia di ordigni bellici e di cadaveri. Le anime erranti che testimoniano ai sopravvissuti le atrocità della guerra.

Cambodja 1999. In the strip of land that separates Thailand from Vietnam takes place the works for laying the first fibre-optic cable in South-east Asia. After decades of wars, this portion of South-east Asia is now heading to be part of the "global village". Poors, farmers, disabled ex-servicemen, rush with the hope of easily finding a job. But, the diggings bring out thousands of military device and dead bodies. The wandering souls, witnesses to the survivors of the atrocities of war.

Rithy Panh

Nato a Phnom Penh nel 1964. Nel 1975 viene rinchiuso in un centro di rieducazione dei Khmers Rossi. Nel 1979 si rifugia in Thailandia e l’anno dopo si trasferisce in Francia dove si diploma all’ IDHEC (Institute des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques). Nel 1994-’95 è co-responsabile della formazione dei registi documentaristi presso l’Atelier Varan, in Cambogia. Ha diretto il suo primo cortometraggio di finzione nel 1988, Le passé imparfait, e l’anno dopo il suo primo lungometraggio documentario, Site II, che vince, fra gli altri, il "Grand Prix du Documentaire" al Festival di Amiens. Nel 1990 offre un ritratto del cineasta africano Souleymane Cissé, realizza il documentario Cambodge, entre guerre et paix (1992) e nel 1994 dirige il suo primo film di finzione, Neak Sre, che ottiene numerosissimi riconoscimenti in tutto il mondo. Ancora due documentari, The Tan’s Family (1995) e Bophana, une tragédie cambodgienne (1996) che si aggiudica premi ai Festival di Marsiglia, Montecarlo, Montréal e Sendai (Giappone). Sempre nel 1996 dirige il suo secondo lungometraggio di finzione, Un soir après la guerre, che partecipa al Festival di Cannes nella sezione "Un certain regard". I suoi ultimi lavori sono documentari: 10 films contre 110 milliards de mines (1997), Van Chan, une danseuse cambodgienne (1998) e La terre des ‰ mes errantes (1999), che nel 2000 ha vinto il primo premio al Festival dei Popoli di Firenze

Born in Phnom Penh, in 1964. From 1975 on he suffered in "Khmers Rouges" rehabilitation camps. Escapes to Thailand in 1979 and arrives in France a year later where he graduates at the French National Cinema School (IDHEC-Institute des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques). In 1994-95 he is co-responsible for the training of documentary directors at l’Atelier Varan, Cambodja. He has directed his first short fiction film in 1988, Le passé imparfait, and his first documentary feature film, Site II, a year later, achieving with it the "Grand Prix du Documentaire", among others, at the Festival of Amiens. In 1990 he offers a portrait of African cinematographer Souleymane Cissé, makes the documentary Cambodge, entre guerre et paix (1992) and in 1994 he directs his first fiction film, Neak Sre, that obtains numerous awards all over the world. Moreover other two documentaries, The Tan’s Family (1995) and Bophana, une tragédie cambodgienne (1996) that achieves awards at the Film Festivals in Marseille, Montecarlo, Montréal and Sendai (Japan). Still in 1996 he directs his second fiction film, Un soir après la guerre, that goes to the Cannes Film Festival in the "Un certain regard" section. His last works are documentaries: 10 films contre 110 milliards de mines (1997), Van Chan, une danseuse cambodgienne (1998) and La terre des ‰ mes errantes (1999), that has won in 2000 the grand award at the Festival dei Popoli in Florence.
