Una notte, in una zona di guerra dello Sri Lanka, infuria la battaglia tra le forze governative ed i separatisti del Tamil. Un soldato sinhalese si nasconde dentro un bunker per sfuggire ai bombardamenti e ai massacri che lo circondano. Improvvisamente, una giovane donna del Tamil finisce nel bunker e accetta di farsi violentare da lui per aver salva la vita. Dopo aver passato due notti con lei, il soldato getta via la pistola e decide di abbandonare l’esercito. Seguito dalla ragazza, si dirige verso il proprio villaggio. Quando arriva, lo trova in preda alla siccità. Non c’è più lavoro ed il denaro scarseggia. L’ unica speranza risiede nell’arruolamento di figli, fratelli e mariti. Ma un disertore come lui distrugge anche quest’ultima speranza..

On night in Sri Lanka’s northern zone a battle rages between Government forces and Tamil separatist fighters. A Singhalese soldier cowers alone in his bunker, indifferent to the bombardment and slaughter taking place around him. Suddenly a trapped and frightened young Tamil woman falls into the bunker. She submits to his rape in order to save her life. After two nights alone with the woman, the soldier throws away his gun and deserts the army. Followed by the woman he heads back towards his village, finding it stricken with drought and despair. No jobs nor money left. The only hope is that their sons, brothers and husbands join the army. But the deserter destroys this last dream....

Asoka Handagama

E’ nato a Sri Lanka nel 1962. Si è laureato in Matematica nel 1986 e nel 1995 ha ottennuto un MSc in Economia presso l’Università di Warwick. Ha debuttato nel cinema dopo aver lavorato in teatro e in televisione. Nel 1985 il suo testo teatrale Thunder ha vinto il secondo premio allo"State Drama Festival". Nel 1988 con Magatha ha vinto il premio come miglior testo e migliore regia, sempre in occasione dello stesso Festival. Dopo essersi aggiudicato altri riconoscimenti per i suoi lavori televisivi, nel 1994 dirige il suo primo film, Chanda Kinnarie, che gli vale il premio "Sri Lanka Critics’ Forum"come miglior opera prima ed il premio "OCIC" come miglior film, miglior regista e migliore sceneggiatura. Ha pubblicato una raccolta di racconti,"Amma Saha Sanda Eliya" (La madre e il chiaro di luna).E’ anche autore dei testi di canzoni popolari e in veste di columnist politico scrive sui più importanti giornali di Sinhala. Nel 1999 ha diretto Sanda Dadayama e nel 2000 Me Mage Sandai.

Born in Sri Lanka in 1962. He graduated in Mathematics in 1986 and obtained in 1995 a MSc in Economics from the University of Warwick. He came to filmmaking via the theatre and television.

In 1985 his stage play, Thunder, was runner-up in the Best-script awards at the State Drama Festival. Magatha won the awards for Best Script and Best Director at the equivalent event in 1988. After obtaining several other achievements for his TV works, he directs his first feature Chanda Kinnarie in 1994, which won the 1994 Sri Lanka Film Critic’s Forum award for Most Promising Director and the OCIC awards for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay. He has also published a collection of short stories in Sinhala, "Amma Saha Sanda Eliya" (The Mother and the Moonlight). He is also a lyric writer of popular songs and a regular political columnist in leading Sinhala newspapers. In 1999 he directed Sanda Dadayama and Me Mage Sandai the following year.
