Chackochan e Chechamma, un’anziana coppia di coniugi, stanno aspettando l’arrivo del figlio e della sua famiglia dagli Stati Uniti. Per l’occasione si celebra una cerimonia religiosa, la casa viene ripulita, si preparano piatti speciali e si apportano molti cambiamenti per accogliere i nipoti. Ma gli ospiti tanto attesi, all’ultimo momento, cambiano programma e partono per le cascate del Niagara. Come se non bastasse, una delusione ancora più grande li aspetta. I parenti hanno deciso di vendere la casa e di mandare i genitori in un ospizio. Increduli e rattristati, i due vecchi abbandonano la casa, portando con sè solo un crocefisso e i loro ricordi.

Chackochan and Chechamma, and old couple, are awaiting the arrival of their son and his family from the USA. A mass is offered for the occasion, the house gets cleaned up, special dishes are rustled up and swings are put up for the grand-children. But the so-waited visitors change their mind at the very last minute and decide to leave for Niagara falls. As it was not enough, another let-down is behind the corner. These relatives have also decided to sell the family house and put their parents in a home for the aged. Bewildered and saddened, the two oldies leave the house, taking with them only a cross for the prayers and their memories.

Jayaraaj

Nato a Kottayam, nel Kerala, nel 1960. Si è laureato in Ingegneria elettronica e telecomunicativa. Nel 1981 si avvicina al mondo del cinema come assistente di produzione con Rat trap di Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Il suo debutto come regista è del 1997, con Desadanam, ritratto di una famiglia che si dispera perchè il figlio di dieci anni sta per entrare in un monastero. Con Kaliyattam (1998) ispirato alla tagedia di Otello, ottiene numerosi riconoscimenti nel suo Paese e partecipa, tra gli altri, al festival di Berlino, Vancouver, Singapore e Bangkok. Karunam (2000) si aggiudica il premio Golden Peacock al 31° International Film Festival of India, Delhi.

Born in Kottayam, Kerala, in 1960. He graduated in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. He entered the film industry as production assistant in 1981 on set of Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Rat trap. His directorial debut came in 1997, with Desadanam, portrait of a family disrupted when the 10-year-old son is chosen as successor to the head of a nearby monastery. Kaliyattam (1998), a version of Othello, grants him numerous achievements in his country and participates to international Film Festivals such as, among others, Berlin, Vancouver, Singapore and Bangkok. Karunam (2000) achieves the Golden Peacock Award at the 31^st International Film Festival of India, in Delhi.
