Sullo sfondo della divisione dell’India, avvenuta nel 1947, si arriva fino agli anni ‘60, nella regione orientale del Pakistan (l’attuale Bangladesh), Minoti e Bidyut sono figli di un vedovo, Shashikanta Sengupta. Badal, Nazma, Salma, loro vicini di casa, sono mussulmani. La famiglia di Shashikanta possiede da molto tempo una casa, chiamata "Panthanir", sulla rive del fiume Chitra. Dopo il 1947, quando molti Indù stanno emigrando in India abbandonando le loro case e proprietà, alcuni mussulmani cercano di occupare "Pantamir". Ma Shashikanta rifiuta con tutte le forze di lasciare il paese.

The film's story is set against the partition of India in 1947, and goes up to 1960s in the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Minoti and Bidyut are children of widower Shashikanta Sengupta. Badal, Nazma, Salma are from a neighboring Muslim family. Shashikanta's family has their old ancestral house named `Panthanir', situated on the bank of the Chitra. After 1947, when a large number of Hindus were migrating to India leaving their homes and property behind, some Muslim neighbours vie for "Panthanir". But Shashikanta refuses stubbornly to leave the country.

Tanvir Mokammel

Nato nel 1955. Dopo la laurea in Lettere e un master in Letteratura inglese presso l’Università di Dakha, partecipa nel 1981 ad un corso di cinema del "Bangladesh Film Archive & Institute". Dopo aver iniziato la sua carriera nel 1984 con un film sperimentale tratto da un poema di Nirmalendu Goon, uno dei più importanti poeti del Bangladesh, dirige il suo primo documentario Smriti Ekattor, sull’uccisione degli intellettuali più in vista del Bangladesh da parte delle truppe pakistane, durante la guerra di liberazione. Nel 1994-’95 realizza il suo primo film, Nadir Nam Madhumati, sulle atrocità commesse durante la guerra d’indipendenza. Nonostante i problemi con la censura, il film vince tre premi nazionali, come migliore sceneggiatura miglior soggetto e migliore colonna sonora. Nel 1999 dirige Chitra Nadir.

Born in 1955. He achieved a bachelor and subsequent master of Arts in English Literature from Dakha University; participating in 1981 to the film course at the "Bangladesh Film Archive & Institute". After starting his career in 1984 with an experimental film, based on a poem by Nirmalendu Goon, one of Bangladesh's front-ranking poets, made his first documentary Smriti Ekattor on the killings of Bangladesh's leading intellectuals by Pak troops during the liberation war. His first feature film Nadir Nam Madhumati, made in 1994-’95 and based on the atrocities during the independence war, causes him some troubles with the censor board. The film won three National awards for 1996 as Best Script, Best Story and Best Music. In 1999 he directed Chitra Nadir.
