Per le vacanze estive, Kang-yi torna a Keelan, un villaggio vicino Taipei, per aiutare il padre che lavora come massaggiatore. L’uomo è rimasto cieco in seguito ad un grave incidente automobilistico, in cui ha perso la vita sua moglie. Secondo un’usanza diffusa in Asia, anche altri massaggiatori sono in parte ciechi. Quando Kang-yi accompagna il padre da un cliente conosce Ah Ping, membro di una banda di gangster appena giunta nel villaggio. I due si innamorano subito l’uno dell’altra scatenando la gelosia di Ah Lim, un compagno di scuola della ragazza e figlio del capo di una banda rivale. Lo scontro sarà inevitabile e sanguinoso.

Kang-yi returns for the summer holidays to Keelang, a village near Taipei, to help her father in the massage salon. The father was blinded in a car accident in which he also lost his wife. The other masseurs in the salon are also half-blind, which is quite common in Asia. When Kang-yi accompanies her father to one of his customers, she meets Ah Ping, a member of a gangster clan who has also just arrived in Keelang. They fall in love with each other, much to the dissatisfaction of Ah Lim, a former classmate of Kang-yi and also the son of a rival gangster family. His jealousy leads to a real war between the two families that ends in tragedy.

Chang Tso-chi

Nato a Chiayi, Taiwan, nel 1961, si laurea in Cinema e Teatro presso il Department of Chinese Culture University. Dopo essre stato aiuto regista di Tsui Hark e Hou Hsiao-Hsien e aver diretto alcuni sceneggiati televisivi, nel 1993 esordisce nella regia con Anye Qiang Sheng . Nello stesso anno fonda una casa di produzione a Taipei. Il suo secondo film, Zhong Zi è una produzione indipendente di Taiwan, realizzata con un budget molto ridotto. Heian Zhi Guang (1999) è il suo terzo lungometraggio.

Born in Chiayi, Taiwan, in 1961, he obtains a Bachelor in Cinema and Theater from the Department of Chinese Culture University. After being assistant director to Tsui Hark and Hou Hsiao-Hsien and having directed some TV fictions, he makes his debut in direction in 1993 with the film Anye Qiang Sheng. In the same year he starts his own production company in Taipei. His second film, Zhong Zi, is a total Taiwanese low-budget indie. Heian Zhi Guang (1999) is his third feature.
