In July 2004 the director and her cameraperson arrived in
Saigon to follow the owners of a Singaporean matchmaking
agency started by a Taiwanese immigrant, and their client, a
37 year-old Singaporean bachelor who eventually left Saigon
5 days later, as a married man. Shortly after their arrival, they
were confined in a dingy hotel room and saw over 80 women
in less than three hours. Each day, men from various parts of
Asia make a stop in Ho Chi Minh City where they embark on
their search for a perfect match. Match Made trails the steps
of a Singaporean man in his pursuit for a virgin bride in
Saigon. Using verité footage and interviews, the film offers a
glimpse into the intricate network of the buying and selling of
women as brides in Saigon, and raises questions about the
nature of marriage, the economic imbalance between countries
in South-East Asia, as well as the idea of individual
choice of a better life.
