This narrative documentary was realized in the summers of
1975 and 1976 in Ladakh, a district of Kashmir bordering to
Tibet and Pakistan, opened to western tourism since 1974.
The beginning part set in the monastery of Lamayaru and
describes the theory and the practice of Tibetan Buddhism
through the eyes of a novice and the experience of a hermit.
It moves then to the small town of Leh, Ladakh's capital, to
tell the story of the town where three ethnic communities live
together with their different religions: Buddhism, Islam and
Hinduism. Each community is represented by another character
who introduces a different situation and different encounters.
In the final part the five characters become the spectators
of a theatre piece about Buddha's life, performed by the
children of the local school of Buddhist philosophy in the
Indo Valley, between the majestic mountains of Karakorum
and Ladakh.
