| How is it possible to create today in Cambodia,
where culture has been eradicated for two generations? In an
attempt to answer this question, Rithy Panh follows a group
of five passionate artists searching for a form of expression
and a theatre. Rotha is a theatre actor and author. DÒun is
an actor who earns his living in TV serial roles and karaoke
bars, and is still dreaming of playing Cyrano! HÒun, an actor
and artist, has set up his camp, like Robinson Crusoe, in the
former national theatre in ruins. Phan, aged 52, is an unemployed
actress who was a presenter on Cambodian television and was
then imprisoned by the Khmers Rouges. Bopha is a journalist
aged 22 who seeks to understand the recent history of her country.
The main setting is the former national theatre, which burned
down ten years ago. Trees have grown there. This symbolic place
is filmed as the sixth character in the film. . |
