Following with a camera a group of professors of the Oriental Studies Department of La Sapienza University (Rome) in their researches for an exhibition on the region, the author imagines two different journeys in two historical times. One journey in the present, following a coal truck on the street running along the Taklamakhan desert, through the oasis-cities, the Uigur bazars and the Chinese cities in full development. The journey of the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang called Tripitaka, in the sixth century towards India in search of the Buddhist holy texts, is told through the archeological remains of the kingdom-cities where Buddhism, tolerance and the silk way trade flourished.
