ASIATICAFILMMEDIALE:
Meeting asian cinema
Achieving this year its sixth edition, Asiaticafilmmediale
– Incontri con il cinema asiatico will be held in Rome from
19 to 27 November, presenting a rich and variegated programme of
feature and documentary films, meetings and round tables with directors
and actors.
The event is organized by the Cultural Association Mnemosyne, in
collaboration with the Foundation Musica per Roma, with the support
and contribution of the Municipality of the City of Rome - Cultural
Policies Department, the Ministry of Culture and the patronage of
various Asian Embassies and Cultural Institutes.
After the success of the five previous editions, this year the festival
will take place in two prestigious venues: the Auditorium and the
Casa del Cinema.
It is a unique opportunity to discover the most interesting and
original representatives of Asian cinema that, after the great response
obtained in several international festivals, finally get to Rome
as well. The festival will present over thirty works, including
films and documentaries, in Italian premiere, produced in Afghanistan,
Burma, China, Cambodia, Korea, Philippines, Japan, India, Indonesia,
Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka,
Thailand, Tibet, Uzbekistan.
Among side events a discussion on the relationship between reality
and fiction will take place at the presence of important Asian guests
and notable Italian journalists, in collaboration with the UNHCR
- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
A novelty marking this edition of the festival is the introduction
of a new section dedicated to “Cinema and Literature”,
with the participation of a high profile guest: Bengalese writer
Mahasweta Devi (Nonino Award 2005; published in Italy by Einaudi,
Teoria and Filema), one of the great authors of our times, who has
filled pages and pages with extraordinary writing for over half
a century: novels, short stories, political articles and essays,
theatre pièces, tales for children. Her commitment in the
struggle against unjustice as well as castal and class violence
in her country has also marked her life for over fifty years. Some
successful films have been drawn from her literary works.
The festival will close with the award of tree prizes: the “City
of Rome Award” to the best 2005 Italian premiere full-length
film, the “Best Documentary Award” and the “Audience
Award”.
