| After
a long stay in London, Sujata Rajasuriya returns to Sri Lanka
with her daughter Aruni. Her sister Sita, who sacrificed her
life to running the family’s mansion, is waiting for them
back home. Sujata and Aruni dream of rediscovering the happiness
they once had. But things are not any more as they used to be.
The mansion, splendour of a bygone age, is doomed to disappear,
and with it, the last illusions of a dying caste will eventually
be shattered.

Born in the western-educated English-speaking social milieu
of colonial Ceylon in 1919, Lester James Peries directed his
first feature film, Rekawa, in 1956. This movie gained wide
international acclaim, winning high praise at prestigious
festivals such as Cannes, Edinburg and Karlovy Vary. His third
film, Gamperaliya (1963),won the Grand Prix at the Internation
Film Festival of India in New Delhi. A pioneer of Sri Lankan
cinema, Lester James Peries has up to now made sixteen features,
among which: Changes in the Village (1964), The Treasure (1971)
and The Village in the Jungle (1979).
