| Two
greedy men plot the murder of a peasant boy in a coal mine in
Northern China. Pretending the boy is a relative, they count
to extort money from the mine owner after the victim’s
“accidental” death. They discover another potential
victim, a young boy, but the young peasant’s innocence
creates tension and unexpected twists in the murderous mineworkers’
scheme.

| Li Yang
was born in Xian, China, in 1959. He graduated in German Literature
in 1990 at the Free University of Berlin, and in Dramatic Theory
at the Ludwig-Maxmillian University of Munich in 1992. After
graduating he went on to study film directing at the Academy
of Media Arts in Cologne till 1995. In 2003, he wrote, directed
and produced his first feature film, Blind Shaft. The film won
the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
