| tribute to Majid Majidi
Majid Majidi, one of the distinguished names of new Iranian cinema
started as an actor in amateur theatrical groups and got roles in
films after the Islamic revolution. We should take into account
why most of Majidi’s films are related with children. The
truth is that these apparently non- political movies were a reflection
of the social situation in contemporary Iran. The children provided
a tangible portrait of Iranian society. The more we look at Majid
Majidi’s films, the more we learn about the methods of perceiving
Iraqi customs and about conscience of this nation. With Abbas Kiarostami
and Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Majid Majidi firmly contributed to the rebirth
of Iranian cinematography. Amongst all filmmakers, Majidi is the
one most in tune with Western sensibilities. If Iranian cinema often
suggests a late flowering of the principles of Italian postwar neo-realism,
then Majidi might be called that country’s Vittorio De Sica.
Like De Sica, he began as an actor. Like De Sica, he has an affinity
for children, amateur actors and emotional portraits of social injustice.
